The Buzz backstory

Really good article from Eric Schonfeld at TechCrunch. He theorizes that maybe the reason Google pushed Buzz out the door early, was to use it as leverage with Twitter.  Because Google wants to glom onto Twitter. Another great reason, quoting now, “links passed through social sharing are beginning to rival search as a primary driver of traffic for many sites. Part of Google’s prowess stems from the fact that it is the largest referrer of traffic to many other Websites. It doesn’t want to lose that status to social sharing streams such as Facebook or Twitter.”

Bingo.

The 9 worst things about Google Buzz

The entire planet has heaped scorn on the fledgling social service from Big G.  So, let’s join in, shall we?  Here’s a story from the Huffington Post detailing the many failings of Buzz.  (And, well, sure- they did an article about how good it is, too.  Way to play it straight down the middle, Arianna.)

Buzz must be the best thing ever made

Judging from the amount of, er, buzz that Google Buzz has been getting, you’d think this was the re-invention of the Intertubes. But there’s been a lotta hoo-hah about privacy, mwah mwah.  (I mean, check this angry woman.) The latest word we have is that Google may consider making a separate Web app for it. As of now, they’re not considering taking it out of Gmail.

Sergey gets Buzzed

TechCrunch has video of Sergey talking about their latest effort in the social space.

So what’s this Buzz all about?

Google Buzz.  And of course, their team already has cool T-shirts with the logo on it. Buzz is Mountain View’s latest attempt to glom onto the social scene. This time, they’re integrating the show into Gmail. Rather than go into all the details you know, like share photos, update status, mwah mwah mwah, let’s let their promo clip do the talking. Update: Looks like Big Purple’s a little snippy about this, eh?
