Today is the twenty-sixth anniversary of the introduction of Apple’s Macintosh computer, the l’il toaster that changed the world and how it uses computers. Fess up time:I was not a fan of GUI computing at the time and was very suspicious of what was going on, I regarded the mouse as something evil and tyrannical, then again, I had worked with other GUIs before the Mac (i.e. Deskmate, GEM, the original Windows). The Mac has come a long way since its auspicious beginnings, it’s been charmingly satirized in Doonesbury, Fox Trot and Bloom County, wormed its way into Western culture as the icon of personal computing, been cloned, been copied, been imitated, but only has been improved upon consistently by Apple and especially the current team under Steve Jobs.
Whatever is presented on Wednesday, let’s welcome the wonders we are not worthy to receive,’til then, let’s imagine how much better and enriched our lives will be when these things of beauty are released amongst us.
